Week 02 - Folk Games and The Playcentric Approach

Some things I found most interesting throughout the lessons this past week were...

Folk games typically reflect the culture they're created in, meaning if you take a deeper look into the mechanics and themes of these basic games, you could pull more info about that culture and its customs. With many of them being culturally specific, it is hard to transfer most of them across cultures. When going over this in class I immediately thought of Squid Games and how there were some Korean playground-type folk games I had no idea existed prior to watching.

As far as the Playcentric Approach goes the analogy I really liked was making games being compared to hosting a party. You set the pace and objective of how you want the party to go but depending on how lax or stringent the rules are any guest could potentially break it or follow exactly as you set it up.

As someone who can get lost in the details, especially in my particular vision of how I envisioned things going it's reassuring to know that your original vision's only true purpose to lead you to the actual interesting game within that idea that is brought to the surface through playtesting and feedback.
