Week 05- Sports Videogames

Videogames inspired by traditional sports are some of the most casual friendly games on the market because of their pick-up and play nature. Most sports are so ingrained into a particular culture that at least the basic rules of it can be second nature to most to at least make it through a game. Rocket League is the video game inspired by real-world soccer that I'll discuss in this devlogIt is born from the arcade versions of soccer which strip a lot of the more technical rules of the game back in an effort to make gameplay less penalty-heavy and more action based, they add onto that idea by having the player control vehicles instead of humans in-game. Doing this helps the creative team behind making the rules to their variation of traditional soccer easily defined when they strip back some of the layers of the original sport you can latch on to something new more easily. For example, in traditional soccer, the airplay is a lot more toned down and the ball travels across the pitch most of the time. Though, in Rocket League you are using these superpowered cars that can boost and jump so the dynamic of juggling the ball and making precise shots from off a wall or extremely high in the air is a core game mechanic.

It also adds to the skill gap that you can see in every sport where someone just starting their go at the sport or game wouldn't know how to perform a juggle with some finesse, in the same way, as someone who has been playing for a month might. That's a parallel to real-life soccer and really any sport.
