Week 15 - The Landlord Game
The landlord game was a game that aimed to simulate the accumulation of wealth and land grabbing as well as the consequences that come along with it. The game's creator Elizabeth Magie says it could've been called The Game of Life. During this time in the early 1900s Magie noticed the rise in popularity of boardgames in American households, she also noticed that these games weren't always just used for entertainment but also for a means of communication. So, she decided to reflect her left-leaning ideals in her games concepts. The origin of the game was covered up by the Parker Brothers as they bought the original rights to the Landlords Game from Magie and adapted it with Charles Darrow an engineer at the time into what we know today as Monopoly. The landlord's games origins are pretty much wiped from all mention of the current-day Monopoly and all materials credit Charles Darrow as the inventor, that's why it's been surrounded in mystery and forgotten along with its creator for all these years.
